Isn’t it funny how the small details sometimes make a big impact and other times they don’t matter at all? When it comes to building a beautiful and useful home, the former is often the case. In a sense, our home is always evolving and will never be completed, but here are some smart, well-designed goods that made the short list for “finishing” up our space.

// Between pottery and books alone, we’re in need of extra storage, so it’s time to start going up the walls! This wall shelf has a modern touch to balance out our wood-heavy midcentury and rustic pieces, and it’s perfect for adding dimension and depth to the space.
// Some things I never seem to have enough of are trivets. This one gets bonus points for being attractive enough to leave on display and out of our limited cabinet space.
// A doormat for a clean-lined statement as soon as you walk up the front steps. Aside from being practical, it would look so good paired with our black arched door.
// I’ve accumulated a lot of supplies for physical therapy plus back support pillows for sleeping–things I need to be easily accessible (or I tend to forget to use them) but not just sitting around. A couple of these baskets will help corral everything nicely.
// We briefly had a large blue ottoman in the living room but decided it took over the room too much and moved it to the office/studio. We miss having a spot to put our feet up. This Blu Dot ottoman is the perfect modest size for our space.
// I can’t complain about squeezing in a little extra seating in the living room, especially when that seating is sleek and elegant like this black leather sling stool.
// A well-designed laundry basket for hauling clothes to and from the laundry room. I would gladly leave this sitting out, empty or full, so it wouldn’t take up precious space in our small closet.
// I bought my sister-in-law and adult niece tea towels for Christmas and felt jealous I couldn’t get one for myself. The colors and patterns really complement the subdued hues in our kitchen.
// The more confident I become in the kitchen, the longer my wishlist of useful tools gets. Aside from a better food processor, an enamel cast iron dutch oven is at the top of that list. The easier the cooking, the more excuses I’ll make to have people over. We definitely need more of that this year!

I have a lot to say about turning 30 in less than two weeks, most of which I’m nervous about sharing –though I’m trying to work up the courage. So instead here are a few lovely goods that piqued my interest in recent months–for my closet, body, and home. Weeks ago I requested one specific item from my husband for my 30th birthday and it’s not any of these things, but what can I say, making wishlists is fun.

//Nisolo mules–I’ve been wanting a pair of tan/sand colored mules for years and these, with their modest heel, strike a nice balance between style and practicality.
//This Tie Blazer from Lauren Winter’s recently released SS17 collection is a dream.
//A fragrant candle with well-designed packaging–yes please.
//A natural woven tote for spring and summer day trips I’ve been planning. Coming up is a quick drive to Columbia, SC to hit up our favorite spots and hopefully the zoo.
//I try not to buy any pottery that’s too similar to something I already own, and without a doubt this stunner of a vase by Ashley Hardy is unlike any other in my collection.
//A pink brooch to wear with my spring and summer denim jackets, because offbeat shapes and designs have a place in my wardrobe no matter how old I get.
//Everyday Oil since I’m terrible about moisturizing anything other than my face and at 30 that definitely needs to change.
//Boxy linen tee, because no other shape (or material!) makes me feel more comfortable and at ease.

I have a wishlist a mile long, but with the official start of Winter close at hand, nothing appeals to me quite like the offerings at Portland based Alder & Co. It’s been a tough year, and I’m aiming for a relaxed, purposed end to 2016 and start to 2017, with a major emphasis on comfort. These goods do the trick. If my husband hadn’t already gotten my Christmas gifts, I’d be sending this list immediately.

//Button up blouse for dressing up or down without the fuss.
//Brass pin for subtle interest on a sweater or jacket.
//Relaxed jeans in black for feeling comfortable and put together.
//Wool socks for a utilitarian and stylish touch.
//A grey coat to wear with all my favorite oversized pieces.
//Canvas tote for exciting holiday travels.
//Striped pajamas for lounging in bed with a good book.
//A beautiful honey jar to display on the counter–for easy access when sweetening the copious amounts of hot tea I’ll be drinking.
//A shallow black bowl for serving up those warm winter dishes I’ve been wanting to try.

Skin Savior from One Love Organics

Now that the new season is here I’m looking forward to getting out and having some fun despite the triple digit temperatures we’re already having. Here are a few pretty things to go along with my plans for a well-spent summer.

// A blanket for picnics in the shade and jazz in the park.
// I didn’t go swimming once last year so my goal is to correct that this summer. I’d love to sport this swimsuit for dips in the pool and hopefully a trip to the beach.
// David and some friends started a chess club at our bookstore and it’s been fun to watch everyone play. I’m interested in learning how, with a beautiful and minimal chess set, of course.
// The perfect summer tee.
// A good book for lazy days and nights.
// Versatile and comfortable woven shoes for those hot days I don’t want to think too hard about what to wear.
// Statement earrings to elevate all the easy summer dresses I’ve been wearing.
// I’ve always been convinced I’m not a hat person, but this beauty from Brookes Boswell has me changing my tune.
// The moisturizer to end all moisturizers. This one has been doing wonders for my skin (I use it as both a moisturizer and a cleanser) and I plan to keep it in my small but powerful arsenal for a subtle summer glow.

Beautiful, understated goods I’ve been coveting lately from my favorite housewares shop, Nalata Nalata. Their attention to refined details and care for the people and stories behind the products they sell is inspiring.

East Fork Pottery

East Fork Pottery

East Fork Pottery East Fork Pottery East Fork Pottery

To say I appreciate ceramics would be a serious understatement. From sculptural to functional, I treasure it all. Recently I downsized my collection but that hasn’t stopped me from thinking about adding in more practical ceramics, particularly in the kitchen. I’ve been on the hunt for a set of plates to allow us to have more guests over in the future, and nothing has appealed to me quite like the work of North Carolina based East Fork Pottery. I love the rich earth tones and slim, modern design of East Fork’s table and house wares collection. There’s an art to having what is essential without depriving yourself of what is beautiful, and East Fork Pottery has accomplished that gracefully.

East Fork Line is simple and fundamental. Unadorned, the work is distilled to its essential elements: form and function.  It is durable and timeless, resistant to fashion and trends.  — East Fork Pottery

One of my favorite things about this collection is how complementary it is in shape, from the serving bowls to the tumblers and vases. I could easily integrate it with our current collection to harmonize together beautifully, whether set at the dinner table or displayed on open shelving in our elemental but modern kitchen. These pieces create such a winsome, inviting scene that’s perfect for sharing with others.

My favorites are the dinner plates and shallow serving bowls in grey, incense burner in white, and the unglazed urchin. I can’t stop thinking about how stunning they’d look contrasted with the brass kitchen accessories also in East Fork’s shop, handmade in Japan by Ruka Kikuchi. Metal and clay are always a winning pair.
