Good Bones | Last Look

I’m finally getting around to posting a complete tour of our apartment, right before we move. It’s nice to remember it one last time in all its glory. I’ll miss this space!

Loving: Akron Street

I don’t normally post on Sunday but I’m in too good a mood not to. We’re officially in pack mode because our house will be done next month! It’s still a few weeks away but to say that I’m ready is an enormous understatement. I said to my father-in-law the other day, “Won’t it be great when we can stop having conversations about how the house is or isn’t coming along and talk about something else for a change?” I can’t wait to get into our forever home and start the nesting process all over again. It brings me so much joy to turn our house into a space we love to be in. I’ve already boxed up things we plan to sell at a yardsale and it was such a relief. I plan to tackle most of the packing myself simply because I have more free time than David, plus cleaning and organizing have always been hugely therapeutic for me. More about all this soon!

Moving provides such a great opportunity to make changes. We feel the freedom to replace items we aren’t thrilled about and we’ve even found places our existing furniture just won’t work. I’ve wanted to sell and switch out our current coffee table for a while. We had it custom made by someone found online for a relatively cheap price but it turned out to be a huge hassle by the end and we were pretty disappointed in the quality of the piece. I can tell that isn’t the case for Akron Street’s clean and effortless goods, which I fell in love with recently thanks to The Fresh Exchange. How stunning are the lines of this Kou Table? The entire American Oak Collection is a pleasure to look at, in fact–perfectly modern without feeling lifeless. The dreamy combination of this muted blue sage rug and Akron Street’s white oak table is making me long for cool temperatures and breezes blowing through open windows. Aside from having a great name, the Morse Coat Rack seems like it would fit our hallway needs perfectly and we’re hoping to snatch it up if our yardsale goes well. I can’t resist adding such wonderfully designed pieces to our home.

I’m feeling some real calm and cozy vibes on this beautiful Sunday–just what I need as I head into the chaos of packing and moving. Here’s to a productive and exciting week!

Thinking About: Lighting

Good Bones | Thinking About: Lighting

Good Bones | Thinking About: Lighting

Jones County Road

I’m having the hardest time deciding what to do about lighting in our new bedroom. For years I’ve bemoaned the fact that our house doesn’t have enough secondary lighting. I love the ceiling fans/overhead lights for the bedroom in the new house but I prefer the less harsh glow of lamps for most occasions. Lamps are expensive and it pains me to spend the money on them but finding decent ones at thrift or antique stores happens rarely. I’m giving in and seeking other options. There might even be too many options. Should we have table lamps beside the bed? Sconces? Swing lights? Cord lights? I love them all and choosing makes me inclined to rip my hair out. I mean, all of these are just so pretty.

David and I are leaning most toward the hanging cord light set up. We love the idea of the white silicone cord and Michele Quan wall mount together. It’s understated and versatile, exactly what we need. What’s your favorite look?

A Few Things

// Summer heat requires lots and lots of popsicles. It’s the perfect treat and just a few minutes from our house. Chocolate sea salt might be my new favorite.

// The dining room table is a mess but it’s worth it to be creating. More on this later.

// David and I are furiously reading Go Set a Watchman. At least once a week we end up sitting outside our favorite downtown spot to drink and read, enjoying each other’s company even in silence. It’s my preferred way to end the day.

Being Vulnerable

1 July, 2015

I’m terrified and excited to be participating in an upcoming group art show. This is the first themed show I’ve ever done and it’ll be a good challenge to branch out from the way I normally work. There’s a sense in which growth does not come by being safe, limiting my work because of a lack of confidence. I need to be vulnerable with others, and that includes creative vulnerability. My friend and artist Kenneth Benson of bensonbensonco designed and printed this beautiful poster for the event. If you’re in the area, stop by and see our To Kill a Mockingbird inspired works.
